Moving is more than transporting boxes from one address to another. It’s one of the most emotional, logistically complex milestones in a person’s life, right up there with getting married. That’s exactly why, on a recent episode of Moving Unboxed presented by 495 Movers, we sat down with Alex Martinez, a top real estate agent with The Agency and a trusted partner of 495 Movers, alongside our Head of Sales, Tom Yospe, to talk about what really happens when a move goes right, and what makes it go very, very wrong.

What Is the Most Important Lesson Every Homeowner Should Know Before Their First Move?

Choosing the right team can make or break your move and affects everything from the sale of your home to your overall experience. There’s a long list of different vendors and partners involved in the buying or selling of a home, including your real estate team, title company, home stagers, landscapers, handyman, movers, cleaners, and the list goes on.

When looking for the right partners, homeowners should look beyond a team that just brings enthusiasm and look into their years of experience, knowledge, and reputation.

Alex says, “Make sure you’re hiring someone who’s got it. He’s got the experience, and he’s got the energy. Who is willing to think outside the box, who is willing to take a leap of faith.”

The takeaway for homeowners: don’t just hire enthusiasm, and don’t just hire credentials. You want both.

Why Do Real Estate Transactions, and Moves, Go Sideways?

A lot of people are just looking where they can save money. However, it can go sideways very fast when agents don’t have that infrastructure, don’t have that support, or don’t have the ability to perform at a high level.

Alex said, “I see agents who end up buying a truck… but they have no idea. They’re not professional movers. I’m gonna lean on people like you who know in and out of what could go wrong.”

Bottom line, cutting corners, especially when it comes to moving, almost always costs more than it saves.

What Advice Would You Give to First-Time Homebuyers Right Now?

With the average age of first-time homebuyers climbing past 40, younger home buyers might feel discouraged. The truth is there is no perfect time to make that move. A lot of people end up analyzing things way too long and they end up doing nothing.

A lot of people just see buying a house as an expense. However, if people start thinking differently about what a home can be, they will find they have alot more options on the table. For example, Alex says, “Maybe you wanna buy your first place to be a duplex, in which you can end up renting one unit and receiving income from that unit. And that unit could be mitigating the cost of the other unit. Now it’s an investment versus an emotional decision so you can start creating that cash flow.”

How Do Realtors and Moving Companies Work Together to Serve Clients?

One of the most underrated parts of a smooth real estate transaction is the relationship between a realtor and a moving company.

  1. Accessibility & Responsiveness

Alex says one of the biggest reasons he trusts 495 Movers is simple: when something goes wrong, someone answers the phone. Real estate deals don’t happen on a 9-to-5 schedule. Buyers back out, closings get delayed, and sometimes clients panic at 11 PM wondering if their movers are really going to show up. Having a moving partner that’s accessible can make all the difference.

  1. A Comprehensive Plan

If your next home isn’t ready yet, make sure your moving plan accounts for every stage of the transition. Many homeowners need temporary housing or extra time before settling into their new space, so working with movers who can provide storage and flexible solutions keeps your timeline on track and reduces unnecessary stress.

  1. The Concierge Effect

Finally, surround yourself with professionals who take a concierge approach to the entire experience. The best real estate agents and moving companies work together to make one of life’s biggest transitions feel seamless. When your team is coordinated, proactive, and invested in your success, you can focus less on logistics and more on the excitement of your next chapter.

Key Takeaways: What to Remember Before Your Next Move in the DMV

  • Hire for experience AND energy. You need both in your real estate agent and your moving team
  • Don’t cut corners on your move. You get what you pay for and a failed move can derail an entire real estate transaction.
  • A moving company and a realtor working together creates a concierge experience that reduces stress and builds trust.
  • There’s no perfect time to buy.Take the leap, ask the questions, work with the right partners.
  • The best professionals add value, not just service.
